When Darryl began his journey with EMA, it marked the start of an important new chapter – not just for him, but his family.
After attending one of our EMA Social Care events in 2025, Darryl expressed to his mum that he was keen to explore support from our team, and from the outset, the transition has been a smooth and reassuring process for them both.
Darryl’s mum describes the move into using our support services: “The transition to EMA was seamless. Brilliant communication from staff, and all questions answered. I have been able to have more time to myself in my retirement and fewer worries.”

Growing Confidence and Independence
Since we began to support Darryl, we’re pleased to share that he has made clear and meaningful progress in his confidence and independence, as outlined by himself, his mum, and our support staff. “Previously, Darryl relied heavily on his mum to manage communication with support staff. Today, he is comfortable contacting the EMA team himself using his phone – an important step towards greater independence”. – Shona, Support Worker.
This shift has empowered Darryl to take more ownership of his support and daily life. Support staff have also seen this growth first-hand: “When staff first went to his house to support him, he was rather shy, but as weeks have gone on I’ve noticed that he’s beginning to be more chatty and he’s even told us directly that EMA as a team support him well, and he feels happy that they are now supporting him! We’re very proud to hear this” – Millie, Support Worker

Building Skills Through Routine
A consistent routine has played a key role in Darryl’s development. On Sundays, Darryl follows a structured plan with pride and enthusiasm. He starts by cleaning out his chinchilla’s cage, followed by vacuuming the lounge and cleaning the kitchen and bathroom. He then prepares his own lunch, washes up afterwards, and enjoys some well-earned downtime – often watching football, playing some games, and chatting with staff. This routine not only supports practical life skills but also gives Darryl a strong sense of achievement and independence. In the kitchen, he is becoming increasingly confident, taking the lead while simply checking timings with staff when needed.
New Experiences and Social Connections
Darryl’s confidence has extended beyond the home into the wider community. Since joining EMA, he has started attending day opportunities, where he has embraced a variety of new activities. He has built friendships, connected with others, and stepped outside his comfort zone – trying experiences such as sailing and visiting local attractions.
He speaks positively about the welcoming environment, the variety of activities, and the chance to meet new people. EMA’s community events have also been a highlight, offering further opportunities for social connection and engagement.

A Positive Impact for the Whole Family
The changes in Darryl’s life have had a meaningful impact on his family too. With increased support in place, his mum has been able to enjoy more time for herself and experience fewer day-to-day worries. Most importantly, the family is now able to spend more quality time together, focusing on enjoying each other’s company rather than managing daily routines.
Darryl himself is clear about what matters most to him. He has expressed that he values the reliability of staff, noting that they are “always on time” – something that makes a real difference to his routine and sense of stability. He describes the team as “helpful and friendly”, appreciating the effort they make to chat, play games, and build genuine connections. He also recognises the support he receives in developing his independence, particularly with tasks around the home.
His journey so far is a powerful example of how consistent, person-centred support can build confidence, foster independence, and open doors to new experiences. And as his mum puts it so simply:
“EMA have definitely opened up a new chapter for us.”
